The Ajax Lake Outpost (25 air miles W N B T)

About 4 miles long, Ajax Lake plus 4 exclusive portage lakes has Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye & Largemouth Bass.  There is lots of deep water up to about 90’ in the main body of the lake.  Rock, boulder shoreline with shallow areas of sand and weed lend itself to a wide range of fishing techniques.  Two large weed bays and lots of smaller cabbage patches offer great casting for Northern and Largemouth.  Trolling, floating or jigging for Trout and Walleye are also great ways to catch fish.

Ajax Lake Outpost – Remote Fly-In Fishing at Its Best

The Ajax Lake Outpost is located approximately 25 air miles from our base in Nestor Falls, placing you deep into untouched Canadian Shield wilderness. This outpost sits at the heart of a five-lake exclusive system, giving your group access to diverse water, multiple species, and true seclusion.

Ajax Lake itself stretches about 4 miles long and features a mix of deep basins reaching 90 feet, rocky shorelines, boulder points, sand pockets, and weed-filled bays. This variety allows anglers to fish effectively in all conditions and target multiple species without long travel times.

Ajax Lake Fly in Access Outpost Cabin

A Five-Lake System with Endless Fishing Options

One of the biggest advantages of Ajax Lake is the ability to explore four additional lakes connected by short portages. Each lake fishes differently, letting your group adapt daily based on weather, wind, or preferred species.

Ajax Lake

More of a flowage lake as water from Ajax, McCarter and Nickle flow into this lake, there is up to 18’ of water in one deeper hole but most of the lake is shallow rock shoreline with lots of week to fish.

Good Bass, Walleye and Northern, topwater at the right times can be a lot of fun.  Flipping twisters, grubs and other plastics works well on all species.  A few spinners and weedless spoons should be in your box too.

The main lake offers classic structure for all styles of fishing.

  • Deep basins for Lake Trout trolling, floating, or jigging
  • Narrow neck-downs that funnel Walleye movement
  • Rock and rubble shorelines ideal for casting
  • Large weed bays and cabbage patches that hold Northern Pike and Bass

This is a true multi-species lake where anglers can change techniques throughout the day.

Ajax Creek

Ajax Creek is a shallow flowage that receives water from Ajax, McCarter, and Nickle Lakes.

  • Rock shorelines mixed with heavy weed growth
  • Excellent topwater action at the right times
  • Productive flipping plastics, grubs, and twisters
  • Strong numbers of Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Walleye

This area is especially fun for anglers who enjoy casting and visual strikes.

McCarter Lake

Boat up the creek and McCarter is a shallow, weedy lake that also has Walleye, Largemouth Bass and Northern.  Same methods as Ajax Creek work well.

Reached by boat up the creek, McCarter is a shallow, weedy lake with a maximum depth of about 13 feet.

  • Ideal for weed-focused presentations
  • Consistent action for Walleye, Largemouth Bass, and Northern Pike
  • A great change of pace from deeper water fishing

Nickle Lake

Nickle is quite a bit different as it has up to 45’ in the middle of the lake and trolling cranks is a good way to find fish here.  A couple mid lake reefs often offer great Walleye fishing, but there are also lots of rock rubble shorelines to work.

Close to half of the lake has shallows with lots of cabbage and weed patches so good options to cast for Large & Smallmouth Bass and Northern.  Some of the largest Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass we have caught anywhere have come from Nickle (22” to 23” on both species).

You can have a great time with good numbers of big Smallmouth here and also Walleye both size and numbers

Nickle Lake offers a completely different profile and is known for producing some of the largest bass in the system.

  • Deep water up to 45 feet in the main basin
  • Mid-lake reefs that hold excellent Walleye
  • Rock rubble shorelines and large cabbage flats
  • Proven producer of 22”–23” Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass

Nickle is a favorite for anglers chasing both size and numbers.

Horseshoe Lake

This lake has some great Northern fishing and a nice 26” to 30” average with lots of numbers.  Husky Jerks, X-Raps and Spinners, plus anything else you want to throw will do the trick.  Your hands will be sore and arms tired by days end.  Rock rubble and shallow weed bays, there is up to 40’ of water in the deepest spots.

Horseshoe Lake is famous for its high-action Northern Pike fishing.

  • Strong average size in the 26”–30” range
  • Rock rubble shorelines mixed with shallow weed bays
  • Depths reaching 40 feet in the deepest areas

This is the kind of lake where long days of casting leave arms tired and smiles wide.

  • Frequent wildlife sightings, including moose feeding in shallow bays and creeks

Bring your camera — many guests say the scenery is just as memorable as the fishing.

Protecting a Pristine Fishery
