Northern Pike
Which specific areas or lake types in northwestern Ontario are known for producing the biggest northern pike?
The biggest pike come from lakes with large weedy bays, abundant forage, and low fishing pressure. On our outpost system, Loonhaunt and Cleftrock are strong pike lakes — Loonhaunt because it's a sprawling system with extensive shallow structure, and Cleftrock because the tea-colored water and weedy bays concentrate pike in predictable zones. Ajax and Gordon hold pike too.
On the camping side, nearly every lake in our system has northern pike — Arrow, Barass, Carsten, O'Dell, and more. Pike thrive in the same Canadian Shield waters that produce great walleye, so you've got options on almost any lake you choose.
Is trophy pike the main goal for your group, or are you looking for a lake where pike are part of a multi-species mix?

A pike strike is an experience unlike any other. They are the freshwater equivalent of a shark—a sudden, aggressive ambush that can nearly rip the rod from your hands. Because our remote lakes have no fishing pressure, the pike are bolder and more aggressive than those found in heavily fished waters.
Trophy Potential is Massive
While you’ll catch plenty of smaller, active “hammer-handles,” the real draw is the potential for a “Gator”—a trophy Northern Pike measuring 40+ inches.
Our commitment to keeping our outposts low-pressure and exclusive ensures these magnificent, older fish remain in the system, actively feeding and growing. If you want a wall-hanger, this is where you find it.
The Entire Lake is For Your Group
You and your group are the sole anglers on most of our lakes. This exclusivity protects our large, breeding pike that keep our fisheries world-class.
Best Pike Lakes: Where the Gators Hide
Pike thrive in lakes with expansive shallow bays, dense weed lines, and structural elements that allow for ambush.

| Lake | Flight Time | Primary Focus | Other Species |
| Loonhaunt Lake | 19 min | The Pike Hunter’s Favorite | Walleye, Bass, Trout, Muskie |
| Cleftrock Lake | 35 min | Structure and Weeds | Walleye |
| Ajax Lake | 25 min | Exploration for Big Pike | Walleye, Bass, Lake Trout |
| Gordon Lake | 36 min | Trophy-Size Pike | Walleye, Muskie |
Loonhaunt Lake (19 air miles) – The Pike Hunter’s Favorite
This sprawling lake system offers endless shallow bays, weed lines, and transition areas—the perfect habitat for pike of all sizes. Loonhaunt Lake‘s variety makes it an ideal spot for anglers who like covering water with different presentations.
Cleftrock Lake (35 air miles) – Structure and Weeds
Cleftrock Lake‘s three-lake system features clear demarcation between deep and shallow water, providing excellent ambush points for feeding pike. Target the submerged timber and heavy weed beds near the mouths of bays.
Gordon Lake (36 air miles) – Trophy-Size Pike
While famous for its walleye, Gordon Lake also holds surprisingly large Northern Pike, often found near the same deep structural features as the walleye. If you’re targeting multi-species trophies, this is a top choice.
Techniques for Landing Monster Pike

Northern Pike are aggressive, but landing a true trophy requires heavy gear and strategic presentation.
Big Baits, Big Fish
You need to throw large, flashy lures to appeal to the biggest, most territorial pike.
- Lures: Heavy spoons (like Dardevles), large bucktails, and oversized spinnerbaits (1 oz+).
- Color: Bright, fluorescent colors or natural patterns (silver/blue) work best, especially in low light or stained water.
- Presentation: Fast retrieves are often key—pike are motivated by speed and reaction.
Essential Gear and Leaders
Pike teeth are razor-sharp. Using the wrong gear will result in lost fish and expensive lures. You must use a leader.
- Tackle: Use medium-heavy to heavy casting rods, braided line (50lb+), and a reliable drag system.
- Leader: A strong wire or heavy (80-100 lb) fluorocarbon leader is absolutely mandatory.
Crucial Gear: Don’t lose your trophy! Learn the necessity of leaders and the right rods to handle a massive pike.
Seasonal Pike Hotspots
- Spring/Early Season (May-June): Pike concentrate in the warmest, shallowest water and emerging weed beds. They are at their most aggressive and easiest to locate.
- Mid-Summer (July-August): As temperatures rise, the big pike often retreat to deeper weed edges or submerged points, but they will still move into the shallows at dawn and dusk.
- Fall (September): Pike feed heavily before ice-up. This is a prime time for large lures and focusing on areas where forage fish concentrate.
Target the Giants: We detail the best seasonal locations and strategies for landing your 40-inch trophy.
The Catch & Release Commitment
Northern Pike over 30 inches are the key breeders in the ecosystem.
To maintain our trophy potential, we strongly encourage catch-and-release for all large pike.

Handling and Release is Critical
Due to their sharp teeth and powerful jaws, handling pike requires specialized tools:
- Large Rubber Net: Essential for safely securing the fish boat-side.
- Long Needle-Nose Pliers or Jaw Spreader: Necessary for safe hook removal.
Quick, safe release is essential for the fish’s survival, especially in warmer water.
Safety & Conservation:
Take care to hold the fish horizontal when handling and releasing a giant Northern Pike.
